The title of a book is like the name of a person, which amongst the Hindus, in particular, is very significant. It is generally given in a naam sanskar (naming ceremony). A family astrologer or temple priest describes the characteristics of a newly born baby based upon the Zodiac signs or horoscope duly prepared. A propitious time and name are chosen accordingly. For me, this process is no less important even when it comes to choosing a title of my book or a Reflection. After having given titles to over a thousand Reflections and eight books, it still takes considerable amount of time and thought for the naming of a new one. The process involves frequent tinkering with both syntax and semantics.

The material of this book has bubbled up in different settings. But its book form has literally come out into its own existence like a baby to its parents when there was no planning for it! Putting the book together was like preparing Indian homemade ghee (a kind clarified butter) – you start from unpasteurized milk; turn it into curd; then curd into lassi and churn the butter out from the lassi. Finally, slow heat melts down the butter and it is filtered into ghee.It involves various stages of bacterial and mechanical processes. This book material has grown out of 65 years of my being in education – both as a student and teacher – however, all based upon my personal experiences and observations. Yes, I feel blessed with my power to observe scenarios and uncanny ability to interpret them. Therefore, I am not talking about anybody else’s experiences; I am not quoting anyone. There is no bibliography at the end.
There is a total of 98 Reflections and articles going back to 1987 and written through 2014. They are distributed over three sections in a chronological manner. The First section, EDUCATION CO-ORDINATES, includes thirty-one Reflections on the fundamentals of education and institution. In mathematics, the choice of co-ordinates make a big difference in the solution of a problem.
The Second section of the book is titled as, EDUCATION –ADMINISTRATION. It has forty-one Reflections. Most of the Reflections were written when I was the Associate Dean of the College of Sciences (2003-2006). In that position, I dealt with the students, faculty, administration, and tackled issues far beyond the confines of my experience as a mathematics faculty member. I often represented the Dean and the College at several functions and events. Being a toastmaster, I looked forward to such public opportunities, as they also provided me new material to write on. One of most important features of educational enterprise is its component of administration – how lean, speedy and responsive it is. Overall, Reflections in this section are directed on straightforward aspects of education.
In contrast to the Reflections in the Second section, the title, NON-LINEAR EDUCATION of the Third section, implies that educational substance and values are not clearly set on the surface. There are twenty-six Reflections in this section. The term, Non-Linearity comes from mathematics. It means that various aspects of education are not seen right on the surface. One has to adjust one’s lens to discern them. For example, my talks to middle school students have non-traditional educational value for them in a long run of their lives.
With regard to the organization of the matter in all of my books, a couple of things are like the fixed points of a mathematical function. Number one is the chronology of the Reflections – dating every Reflection; the second date in a few cases means significant revision since the first date. I am getting increasingly convinced of its value. It tells the reader where my thoughts are coming from – the reader does not have to probe around for it. Whenever, I read the writings of other authors, I always remain curious as to when and where this piece was written. Thus, my entire book opens out in an ‘evolutionary’ manner.
The second feature is the spaces for PERSONAL REMARKS - spread over in 5-6 places. Furthermore, the last two pages are marked exclusively for comments in detail. Personally, I can’t read a book without scribbling with a pencil along inside it!

PLUMS PEACHES AND PEARS OF EDUCATION Satish C Bhatnagar 9781490770710 Books Reviews
“Plums, Peaches and Pears of Education” is a collection of short reflections, which the author wrote to share his unique experience with a reader and express his opinion on some aspects of work in academia, and on the educational system in general. When you take the book in your hands, the first thing that catches your attention is the book cover. It is bright green, the color of glory and growth, and in front of it there is a drawing of the Goddess Sarasthena. Sarasthena is a combination of two female Goddess figures, Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, music, arts and wisdom and Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom and strength. This image provides us with the expectation that the book would be about education and knowledge and that it would be based on both Hindu and Western cultures. The book proves these expectations true. The author tells unique stories of a person who has been involved in academic life for several decades both a Professor and a Researcher. He tells a reader about the educational and cultural events, which were interesting to him, such as Shakespeare festival and Dean’s letters in order to illustrate how the university has been evolved. The author’s reflections are divided in three parts and all of them have their own main subject and are written in a particular time period. The book is full of thoughtful comments on the commonality and differences between the values and traditions of education in India and the US. The author uses a vivid, illustrative language. His book is full of rhetorical elements, such as allusions, comparisons and metaphors, which makes the book more interesting reading.
